ABOUT COURSE - THE INTRODUCTORY AFRICAN
- LUO TO ENGLISH LANGUAGE TRANSLATION 101.
*LUO LANGUAGE LEARNING & TRANSLATION TRAINING
PROGRAM* CODES: L.T.P - LUO - 101 / 0.5 (Basic, Half Credit)
and L.T.P. - LUO - 102 / 0.5 (Intermediary, Half Credit):
This is a special - interest, instructor - led "self - directed"
language learning and translation course. The on - line
course offered here is to be completed over five weeks
for the basic level one, and over five weeks for the
intermediary level two.
A much slower pace of five months is sufficient for thorough
wholesome mastery of the African Luo Language through
own (not instructor - led) "self - directed" learning at each
of the two levels one and two.
P.S. NOTE:
Luo is a general term applied to many African culturally
near - similar tribes who speak varied languages, some
- times of near - similar dialects. Rigorous research and
anthropological studies have been done in the academic,
geo - political or socio - economic fileds of some of these
regions. This language translation and training program
focusses on the Luo language of the central sub - region
of Uganda known as Lango, about which there is enough
reference materials and resources for language study.
GOALS OF THE LANGUAGE TRAINING PROGRAM:
This language training is a part of cross cultural education that aims at
strengthening bonds between African culture and the American
cultural mosaic among various other cultures world wide.

thereby understanding and appreciation of our cultural
differences, as well as our heritage inorder to spice up life.
- Exploring our world through our language and culture
in relation to: selected world languages and cultures;
world politics plus other global issues of interest;
and current social or economic events.

The Western Nilotic (Luo) language owes its origin to many, including the Lango of Uganda.They like their Northern neighbours, share many cultural characteristics with their Ateker (Eastern Nilotic) neighbours.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE LANGUAGE TRAINING

- E-Talk shows focussing on African languages and society.
- Cross cultural educational audio entertainment via: music,

The student is expected at the end of training, and
within a 'practice makes perfect' period of five weeks
(or five months for the very slow but sure self - pace learner),
to be as fluent as the indigenous Luo speaking persons.
The student must be able to write or to interprete any Luo:
poetry, drama, folk art, film and music. The CD sounds of Luo
cultural foundations above for example, "is dedicated to the
elders and the clan leaders (Edongo) who have done very
good and great things for the people of Ethurr (Labwor).
It praises the cultural traditions, ways and cuisines
including courtship, leadership, conflict resolution, and
the spirit of pulling together in times of need and
celebration. It commends the system of oral tradition of
handing over knowledge as a way of preserving
the people's history and literature."

THAT ARE TAKEN AT ONE'S OWN SELF - CHOSEN LEARNING PACE
THIS "SELF DIRECTED", SELF - PACED AFRICAN LUO - LANGO -
TO ENGLISH TRANSLATION IO1 LANGUAGE TRAINING PROGRAM
IS A 40 LESSONS ON-LINE COURSE OFFERED OVER ANY
TIME FRAME PERIOD AS THE STUDENT MAY CHOOSE.
NOTE: THIS LTP - LUO - 103 / 1.0 (FULL COURSE) IS NOT OFFERED
THROUGH THE FIVE WEEK SEMESTER PROGRAMS DURING
SPRING SEMESTER BETWEEN APRIL AND JUNE OR DURING
SUMMER SEMESTER BETWEEN AUGUST AND OCTOBER.
UP IN FIVE 4-WEEK PORTIONS.
where Part 1 is the Basic Level One - first 20 lessons
and is taken over any ten week period and part 11 is
the next Intermediary Level - 20 lessons
and is also taken over any ten week period.
Extensive use is made of audio-visuals, with intensive
training in listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Note on the lessons and related assignments:
Lessons for the week are posted by sunday,
at the beginning of each week. This includes the tutorial,
dicussion topics and the end-of-lesson assignments. Students
are free to e-mail or to post the answers to their own personal web
Pages, and provide tutor with the link to their specific answers-page.
All answers to assignments are to be posted / handed in
by saturday mid-night, one week from the time
the weekly assignment is given.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR ENROLLMENT:
"OPEN ENROLLMENT" IS MAINTAINED SO ANYONE CAN ATTEND,
WHO HAS A GOOD COMMAND OF ENGLISH, WITH A PASS GRADE
AT THE ELEMENTARY - PRIMARY SCHOOL - GRADE SEVEN LEVEL
OR HIGHER.
This basic command or English language must be accompanied by the
student obtaining "English Vocabulary Certification" through taking of
the free on - line English Vocabulary Certification Test, at Brainbench
Test Center - located at http://www.tinyurl.com/2es9at. Students who are
applying to take *the intermediary level* African - Luo Language course
must in addition first obtain the "English Language Sentence structure
Certification" (http://www.tinyurl.com/2gcayj), as well as the English
"Words and Phrases Certification" (http://www.tinyurl.com/25nba9)
FULL ON-LINE ENGLISH COURSES ARE AVAILABLE IF REQUIRED.
To apply and register for African Luo language training, the
student must in additon write in the English language, then e-mail
to the instructor at luo2english@gmail.com
a resume and a one - 2 page essay entitled: " Why I would
like to study the African Ugandan Luo - Lango language".
Note when writing the essay, that specific attention is paid to the
unique requirements of students who choose to take this course.
Tip: African Luo / Lango is one of many African Luo languages
whose speakers to a small or large extent, understand each other.
* A USD $20.00 fees is paid directly to the institution of
learning, for the semester in which the basic or advanced level
of the African Luo language course is being taken. Students
must have reliable access to the world wide web and browser.
Version 5.5 or higher of internet explorer is recommended.

TAKING OF THE FINAL CERTIFICATION EXAMS IS OPTIONAL FOR
SELF - PACED STUDENTS WHO ARE ONLY AUDITING THE COURSE.
STUDENTS AIMING AT RECEIVING OFFICIAL C.E.U. GRADES MUST
TAKE THE BASIC LEVEL AND INTERMEDIARY LEVEL EXAMINATIONS.
* OPTIONAL - EXTRA CREDIT PROJECT:
IN PLACE OF THE END - OF - LESSON COURSE GRADES, A STUDENT
MAY CHOOSE TO CONDUCT RESEARCH ON A TUTOR - APPROVED
SELF - STUDY RESEARCH PROJECT FOR THE TOTAL OF 20% GRADE
TOWARDS THE FINAL COURSE GRADE FOR BASIC LEVEL ONE. THE
SAME APPLIES TOWARDS GRADES FOR INTERMEDIARY LEVEL TWO:
A RESEARCH TOPIC ON AFRICA MUST BE STUDIED IN A GLOBAL
CONTEXT. THIS HANDS - ON PRACTICAL EXAM SECTION MAY
INVOLVE TRAVELLING, LIVING OR INTERACTING IN AN AFRICAN
LUO - LANGO SPEAKING ENVIRONMENT (LIMITED SPONSORSHIP

2 - PART EXAMS: PREPARATORY AND FINAL EXAMS ARE GRADED
TO CONSTITUTE THE FINAL COURSE GRADE (INCLUDING 20% FROM
END - OF - LESSON ASSIGNMENTS OR CONDUCTED RESEARCH PROJECT)
BASIC LEVEL PREPARATORY EXAMINATION
- PART ONE, IS ON THE LAST SATURDAY OF WEEK 4:

IS FOLLOWED UP ON THE FINAL SATURDAY OF WEEK 4, BETWEEN
9.00 AM - 11.00 AM, BY THE PREPARATORY EXAMINATION, AS PART
ONE, OF THE TWO - PART EXAMINATION FOR THE BASIC COURSE.
BASIC LEVEL FINAL EXAMINATION
- PART TWO, IS ON THE LAST SATURDAY OF WEEK 5:
THE SAME FORMAT AS THE ABOVE FOR THE BASIC LEVEL PART ONE EXAM
APPLIES TO THE FINAL PART TWO OF THE TWO - PART EXAMINATION
TOWARDS THE TOTAL BASIC COURSE GRADE.
IN SUMMARY,
COMPLETION OF (1 MONTH, 1 WEEK) BASIC LEVEL TRAINING IS
FOLLOWED BY THE FINAL SATURDAY OF WEEK 4 EXAM COMPRISING
2 HOURS FOR *THE PREPARATORY* EXAMS OF 24 MINUTES PER
SECTION (FIVE SECTIONS), FOR A 30% TOTAL GRADE.
* THE FINAL BASIC LEVEL WEEK 5 EXAMINATION ON THE LAST
SATURDAY MORNING BETWEEN 8.00AM - 11.00 AM COMPRISES
3 HOURS OF THE *THE FINAL* EXAMS, OF 36 MINUTES PER SECTION
(FIVE SECTIONS), FOR A 50% TOTAL GRADE.
NOTE
THE 5 - PART PREPARATORY EXAM INCLUDES: (1) TRANSLATION;
(ii) ORALS; (iii) WRITTEN; (iv) PRACTICALS; & (v) GENERAL SECTIONS.
THE LATTER COMPRISES MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS.
AND
THE 5 - PART FINAL EXAM INCLUDES: (I)TRANSLATION; (II) ORALS;
(iii) WRITTEN; (iv) PRACTICALS; & (v) GENERAL SECTIONS. THE
LATTER COMPRISES MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE SAME EXAMINATION CRITERIA IS FOLLOWED
BOTH FOR THE BASIC LEVEL ONE OF THE AFRICAN - LUO LANGUAGE
TRAINING AND AS WELL FOR THE INTERMEDIARY LEVEL TWO.
FEES SUMMARY:
THE TOTAL FEES FOR THE AFRICAN LUO - LANGO LANGUAGE
LEARNING AND TRANSLATION COURSE IS USD $20.00
for LTP - LUO - 101 / 0.5 taken during a semester, or
USD $ 20.00 for LTP - LUO - 102 / 0.5 taken during a
semester. Only one of the two courses may be taken
at a time, at any of the five - week semester periods.
The fees, used to offset costs of maintaining students'
e - desk, is paid directly to the on - line learning institution
through which the Language certification course is offered.

POLICY ON GRADING
* THE GRADING POLICY -
THE TOTAL BASIC LEVEL COURSE GRADE OF 100% AND /
OR TOTAL INTERMEDIARY LEVEL COURSE GRADE OF 100%
IS ACCUMMULATED BY THE STUDENT AS FOLLOWS:
* 20% EITHER FROM EXTRA CREDIT PROJECT
OR FROM END-OF-LESSONS TEST GRADES -
5% FROM TEST GRADE AT THE END OF EACH BASICS LESSON,
OR 5% FROM TEST GRADE AT THE END OF EACH INTERMEDIARY LEVEL
LESSON. THE TOTAL IS OUT OF 20% FROM END-OF-LESSONS GRADES.
PLEASE NOTE: END-OF-LESSON TEST GRADES CONSTITUTE 100%
OF THE FINAL COURSE GRADE WHERE EXAMS ARE NOT DONE.
EXTRA CREDIT PROJECT HOWEVER, MUST COMPLIMENT EXAM GRADES
* 30%FROM THE PREPARATORY EXAM:
6% FROM MOCK EXAM GRADE FOR EACH OF THE FIVE
SECTIONS, TOTALLING 30% FROM THE PREPARATORY EXAM.
* 50%FROM THE FINAL EXAM:
10% FROM FINAL EXAM GRADE FOR EACH OF THE FIVE
SECTIONS, TOTALLING 50% FROM THE FINAL EXAM.
* SUMMURY OF THE GRADING POLICY:
COURSE WORK = 20%; PREPARATORY EXAM = 30%;
AND FROM THE FINAL EXAM = 50% TOTAL.
A = 90%+ B = 80%+; C = 70%+
(D = 60%+; E = 50%+; F = 40%+)
* THE PASSING GRADE IS GRADE C (70%)
